We are Designers
INTENT
At Haydonleigh School, our intent is that pupils learning Design and Technology find it to be a inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which has a vital role in contributing to a balanced curriculum and creating the problem solvers of the future. Pupils will ‘learn to think’ creatively to solve practical problems both as individuals and through teamwork. At Haydonleigh Primary School, children will have the freedom to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and will apply their learning to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. The children learn how to explore, reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology and develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and on the wider world.
IMPLEMENTATION
Children will be given opportunities to make products based on real-life problems or scenarios, developing a design criteria that takes into account the wants and needs of the target audience. This will link closely to their wider learning within the history and geography curriculum. Children will have the opportunities to work collaboratively with others, sharing ideas, knowledge and supporting each other as they progress in their learning journeys. They will have opportunities to explore and evaluate a range of existing products, and to use what they learn withing their own designs. They will have the opportunity to explore materials and tools, and be taught certain skills which they can use when making their product (cutting, shaping and joining materials). The design criteria will reflect the year group, with more challenging criteria building on their previous learning as the pupils progress through the school.
IMPACT
Children at Haydonleigh Primary School will be able to design purposeful and functional products based on specific design criteria and they will be able to generate, develop and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, 3d models or templates. They will be able to select and use the tools and required and choose appropriate materials based on their characteristics and suitability, in order to create what they have designed. They will then evaluate their design against the design criteria to critically evaluate their product and think of ways to improve their work. They will also have a knowledge of key events and individuals in Design and Technology, and how they have helped shape the world around us.
