PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

We are Global Citizens

 INTENT

Pupils receive a programme that gives them the knowledge they need to make decisions, strengthen them personally and contributes to building their character, ambition and resilience.

  • Pupils are informed of online risks and taught how to report concerns when feeling unsafe.

Citizenship:

  • Children learn about right/wrong, the need for rules and why they help. (KS1)
  • Children learn about democracy, different groups, communities and a range of different religious and ethnic identifies in the UK.

Development of Character:

  • There is a strong, visible ethos of aspiration in the school.
  • There is a consistent promotion of consideration, respect and good manners – reflected in the schools main three rules (be safe, be ready, be respectful).

Wider Opportunities:

  • Pupils are offered opportunities to both develop their interests and to further develop their character/citizenship.

British Values:

  • Pupils are helped to understand democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual tolerance and respect.

  • Pupils are taught to have an understanding of particular groups and learn how to avoid stereotypes.

Health Education:

  • Pupils are taught to make good decisions to help keep them healthy and safe.

IMPLEMENTATION

Every day, children learn what it is to be a Haydonleigh Pupil through our everyday language, assemblies, and discrete lessons. These opportunities teach them our core values, of which there are five; Resilience, Creativity, Respect, Enthusiasm and Unity.

Pupils take part in a PSHE session every week, exploring values and learning behaviours but also combines the schemes of; Jigsaw, St Johns Ambulance, NSPCC and tailored Haydonleigh content.

IMPACT

Children at Haydonleigh understand what it is to be a Haydonleigh pupil by reflecting the school’s values. This is seen in how they talk to their peers, how they move around the building, their attitudes to learning and their understanding of how they take care of themselves. Pupils at Haydonleigh are well mannered and reflective individuals.

Relationship and Sex Education

Consultation - RSHE Policy

The government has introduced updated statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), which all schools will be required to follow from 1 September 2026. As a result, we are currently reviewing our RSHE curriculum and policy to ensure that our provision reflects both the new expectations and the needs of our pupils.

RSE Policy September 2026 - Consultation

In doing so, we are committed to ensuring our curriculum is appropriate and sensitive to our community. This includes careful consideration of pupils’:

  • Age and stage of development
  • Physical and emotional maturity
  • Religious and cultural background
  • Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

As part of this process, we are launching a consultation with parents and carers. Your views are incredibly important to us and will directly inform how we shape our RSHE provision moving forward.

The consultation period will run from: Monday 6th July to Monday 20th July

During this time, you will have the opportunity to review our proposed RSHE policy and curriculum materials, as well as provide your feedback.
