PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

We are Global Citizens

 INTENT

Pupils receive a programme that gives them the knowledge they need to make decisions, strengthen them personally and contributes to building their character, ambition and resilience.

RSE:

  • Pupils are supported to stay safe via lessons in healthy/un-healthy relationships and key concepts such as; respect, consent, kindness and equality.
  • Pupils are informed of online risks and taught how to report concerns when feeling unsafe.

Citizenship:

  • Children learn about right/wrong, the need for rules and why they help. (KS1)
  • Children learn about democracy, different groups, communities and a range of different religious and ethnic identifies in the UK.

Development of Character:

  • There is a strong, visible ethos of aspiration in the school.
  • There is a consistent promotion of consideration, respect and good manners – reflected in the schools main three rules (be safe, be ready, be respectful).

Wider Opportunities:

  • Pupils are offered opportunities to both develop their interests and to further develop their character/citizenship.

British Values:

  • Pupils are helped to understand democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual tolerance and respect.

Equality:

  • Pupils are equally given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities.
  • Pupils are taught to have an understanding of particular groups and learn how to avoid stereotypes.

Health Education:

  • Pupils are taught to make good decisions to help keep them healthy and safe.

IMPLEMENTATION

Every day, children learn what it is to be a Haydonleigh Pupil through our everyday language, assemblies, and discrete lessons. These opportunities teach them our core values, of which there are five; Resilience, Creativity, Respect, Enthusiasm and Unity.

Pupils take part in a PSHE session every week, exploring values and learning behaviours but also combines the schemes of; Jigsaw, St Johns Ambulance, NSPCC and tailored Haydonleigh content.

IMPACT

Children at Haydonleigh understand what it is to be a Haydonleigh pupil by reflecting the school’s values. This is seen in how they talk to their peers, how they move around the building, their attitudes to learning and their understanding of how they take care of themselves. Pupils at Haydonleigh are well mannered and reflective individuals.

Relationship and Sex Education

From September 2020, it was made a statutory requirement that all schools in England and Wales are teaching Relationship and Sex Education as a fundamental part of the curriculum.

The statutory guidance can be found at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

The guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.

Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.

As part of implementing the RSE curriculum, schools must consult with the children, parents, staff and governors to ensure there is a general consensus on our approaches to policy and the curriculum content.

The following documents are for your information.

RSE Curriculum Parent Consultation Feedback 2023

We invited you to share your views on our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum which is delivered through PSHE lessons here at Haydonleigh. The purpose of the consultation was to share with you our curriculum approach and to seek your feedback. We would like to thank all parents and carers who took time to submit responses and complete the questionnaire.

In total, we had 3 responses from families with children from various year groups giving us information about the thoughts and concerns of parents and carers.

Overall, in the face to face meetings, the responses gathered were positive about the curriculum and what we do to ensure that our pupil have the appropriate knowledge and understanding of safe and healthy relationships based on respect.

Here are the results of the consultation questionnaire Parent Consultation Responses 2023

Within this attachment you will find the outcomes to questions asked alongside our response as a school. This document covers various concerns about specific topics and signposts readers to where they can find additional information.
