We Are Physically Active

INTENT

At Haydonleigh Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum which inspires and engages all pupils in a supportive and challenging environment. We aim to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to lead healthy, active lives, are physically active for sustained periods of times and continue this after primary education. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident and opportunities to build character by competing in a range of sports and physical activities. We also aim to teach pupils how to cooperate and communicate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity or play to embed life long values.

At the end of their time at primary school, pupils will have developed and mastered fundamental movement skill; including running, jumping, throwing and catching. They will have been provided opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, both individually and with others. Pupils will have learnt how to use skills in different ways and will be able to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. In different physical activities and sports, pupils will develop an understanding of how to improve and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own successes. Furthermore, swimming is an important life skill so we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Haydonleigh, PE is taught twice a week. Lessons provide challenge and enjoyable learning experiences through a range of sporting activities, including fundamental skills, invasion games, net and ball games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) and swimming. To ensure that pupils are drawing upon prior learning and that skills are embedded and reviewed, a progression of skills document and knowledge organisers are used to support the creation of medium-term plans. We also use the Real PE scheme of learning for fundamental skills lessons, ensuring content and delivery is age appropriate and lessons, year on year, are progressive.

We promote both participation and competition through PE and sport and ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons. We utilise our school’s house teams to allow all children to participate in intra house sports competitions three times a year. Additionally, we have an annual sports day, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.

We offer a OAA experiences for all children in key stage 2, including high ropes, orienteering, archery, water sports and a residential in Year 5.

IMPACT

Throughout their time at primary school, our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental wellbeing. At Haydonleigh, we aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable, challenging, and accessible for all pupils, providing them with the opportunities to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques, which they can apply in a range of sports and activities. We provide pupils with a supportive, stimulating, and safe environment to explore activities and sports before developing this further outside the primary school curriculum. Children have opportunities to participate in sport after school and can also represent the school at sporting events within the local community.
