We are Computer Scientists
At Haydonleigh, our high-quality computing curriculum aims to give our pupils the life-skills required to embrace and utilise technology in a socially responsible and safe way. As they progress into the 21st century workplace, we want our pupils to be autonomous and independent users of the wide range of technology integrated in all sectors, as well as know the career options which become available if they choose to study computing.
In their time at our school, we also aim to use technology to enhance teaching and learning across the entire curriculum, giving all pupils a broad range of experiences with technology. We aim to support pupils in becoming digitally literate and competent users of technology, promoting ‘computational thinking’ to develop their creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills.
In addition, our e-safety curriculum aims to prepare pupils to live safely in an increasingly digital British society. We want our pupils to develop as respectful, responsible and confident users of technology, aware of measures that can be taken to keep themselves and others safe online.
In order to achieve the outlined intentions, our Computing curriculum is continuously reviewed through monitoring and evaluation by the Subject Leader. Teachers demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm for the subject content and their expectations in each lesson are derived from the Progression of Knowledge document.
The three strands outlined in the National Curriculum are split into four at Haydonleigh:
- Computing systems and networks
- Creating media (Digital Literacy)
- Data and information (Information Technology)
From Foundation Stage through to Year 6, our pupils are regularly exposed to various forms of technology in a range of contexts, including through cross-curricular links. In addition, E-Safety lessons are taught through age-appropriate activities every term. Resources for these sessions are taken from the Project Evolve resource bank, with staff utilising knowledge maps to assess and target areas of weakness in their pupils’ knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe online.
From Years 1 to 6, pupils work through four units of discrete computing lessons per year, with each unit building upon prior knowledge. These lessons follow the sequence provided by the NCCE Teach Computing curriculum and have been selected by the Subject Leader to ensure both that there is progression and that the content is suitable for us as a school.
In order for the delivery of our Computing and E-Safety curriculum to be effective, and to support the delivery of a broad range of lessons across the school, we continually maintain, update and develop our resources. These include:
- Interactive boards in every classroom to enhance and promote effective use of technology for learning
- 45 pupil laptops for use within lessons
- 30 iPads allocated to Foundation Stage at all times
- 30 iPads allocated to KS1 at all times
- 30 iPads allocated to LKS2 at all times
- 30 iPads allocated to Year 5 at all times
- 30 iPads allocated to Year 6 at all times
- A range of programmable devices, including Bee-bots (KS1)
- A plug-in devices, including Raspberry Pi Crumbles (UKS2)
- The use of Google Classroom to promote and support communication and collaboration across the curriculum.
Measuring the impact of our Computing and E-Safety curriculum is vital for ensuring that pupils leaving Haydonleigh have the knowledge and skills required to succeed and in increasingly IT-based world. To do this, the subject leader will:
- Monitor the quality of lessons being taught across the school, providing pedagogical support if needed.
- Conduct staff and pupil voice to assess subject knowledge and attitudes towards the subjects.
- Monitor work saved on Google Classroom to check quality and quantity matches the expectations set in the National Curriculum.
- Monitor assessments made by teaching staff to ensure consistency across each year, phase and the school.
